Abstract

Probe Engineering Company Limited, incorporated in 1971, and started by four electrical engineers each with a capital of £50, were fortunate to have one main customer who experienced spectacular growth. By 1979 a turnover of over £700,000 was achieved. The hope of a £1 million turnover in 1980 was dashed by the recession. There are three interesting features in this case: (1) the first concerns the mix of medium and low technology products; (2) the second is related to the desirability of selling direct to customers as well as manufacturers; and (3) the third is the interaction between the choice of products and markets and the relationships between the Marketing and Technical functions.
