Abstract

A Personnel manager faces typical promotion problems of a company with significant numbers of immigrant staff; an Asian clerk who wishes to become a buyer but lacks, in management''s view, the required interpersonal skills, and a Jamaican worker whom everybody concerned would like to see as a chargehand if only he would agree to be promoted. Management is confronted with the problem of reconciling immigrant abilities with expectations. It also finds that the racial "symptoms" mask other fundamental problems to do with promotion.
