Abstract
Examines the strategy of a major UK quasi government agency to survive in a complex and changing political environment. Details expansion during 1959-68 from traditional functions of procurement and professional services for overseas government into commercially more adventurous activities on the Crown Agents' own account in finance, banking, property development and equity participation. The case enables the student to explore the organisation as a function of the environment and national culture, the nature of organisational objectives, behaviour, climate and leadership style and the problems of a quasi government agency attempting to reconcile its role as a quasi government agency with that of a commercial enterprise. Unilever Award Winning Case
