Abstract

This case concerns a subsidiary of a large group which enjoys international renown; the business is essentially concerned with one product and therefore vulnerable to a world-wide shrinking market. Although the company has autonomy as far as its own balance sheet is concerned, it requires group approval for quite moderate capital expenditures. The situation is also paradoxical in that while the group has specialised central services, the firm is free to use outside consultancies. The material can be used to stimulate thought on ways of transforming a pedestrian company into a lively and progressive one.
