Abstract

In 1977 a single row sugar beet harvester, which had been used on a medium sized arable farm in East Anglia for a number of years, was almost worn out and in December 1978 it finally broke down completely and was beyond repair. The case outlines the decision making process involved in the purchase of a replacement machine and trailers, and also shows how some existing machinery had to be modified to fit into a new system. The case can be used to illustrate buying behaviour related to the purchase of a medium priced piece of capital equipment.
