Abstract
This is the first of a two part case series (579-010-1 and 579-011-1). At the end of 1977 Alitalia management was faced with the problem of the fare structure of the Europe - North America route. In recent years, the development of charter flights, increased oil costs, and generally stiffer competition on the air transport market had called for a thorough reappraisal of IATA fares to be made. At the time there were 157 different fare combinations available with the accompanying problems of ''orientation'' and understanding for passengers, agents and the companies themselves.
