Abstract
The (B) case is the key case in the series (378-004-1 to 378-006-1). It describes the way the functional/specialist departments on the one hand and the regions on the other are organised. The nature of the key tasks, particularly at the level of the station manager (S.M.) and the regional director (R.D.), are described to help the students to identify the high need for integration/coordination of diverse functions at lower levels. The relative power of the Functional Directors over the Regional Directors through control over key resources (assets and specialists) would indicate the existing degree of high differentiation and low integration. Systems, structures and processes are loaded against the lower level G.M.s, namely R.D.s and S.M.s. Students can be asked to suggest means of bringing a better balance between the differentiation and integration needs with sufficient warning that either extreme will be bad. The nature of the task demands both.
