Abstract
Each of the three cases in this series (378-007-1 to 378-009-1) can be studied in isolation but greater benefit will be obtained if they are studied as a three stage package. Essentially the series is about acquisitions and the marketing of building materials. Hence it can be useful to students of both general business policy and marketing, at postgraduate or undergraduate level, as well as middle or junior level executive courses. In tracing the rapid growth of the firm through a series of acquisitions it looks at the need for and fundamentals of a sound acquisition strategy, the varying motives behind acquisitions, the consequential benefits and some of the problems. Marketing students will be able to examine the role of the merchant and the determinants of purchasing decisions in a complex and unstable industry.
