Abstract
The subject of this case study, rural deprivation, came to the fore in 1975 following the bitter dispute concerned with the forced merger of two separate county councils, and the subsequent centralisation of management of the new authority. The material presents the background to the establishment of a multi disciplinary group of officers to analyse rural deprivation. It is therefore intended to highlight, and present the opportunity for, an analysis of the needs and problems of a particular community. A vast range of public policy issues can be identified from the case and can be used for group work and formal teaching.
