Abstract
This note describes the trends of the European vehicle industry in terms of market growth, product characteristics and movement of trade up to the early 1970s. The structure of the industry in each of the major producing countries of France, Germany, Italy and the UK is considered together with brief comment on the activities in other West European and Communist Bloc countries. The text is backed by a detailed set of numerical exhibits on sales, outputs, total vehicles in use, vehicles per 1,000 people etc, for both cars and commercial vehicles. The note can be used to provide experience in identifying major trends which affect large scale international industries.
