Abstract
The case provides background data on the National Health Service in the UK and the scope of the private health sector within the total medical system. BUPA's services in 1972 and financial results between 1961 and 1971 are described. The case can be used to discuss the setting of objectives in a non profit making organisation which has highly successful financial results. The formulation of policy in a situation subject to government policy changes can also be considered.
