Abstract
Describes a shy but kindly Principal who tended to leave his heads of department to manage their own affairs. The simultaneous appointment of three new heads of department created a demand for the Principal to interest himself more deeply in departmental matters. This he refused to do, on the grounds that staff had poked fun at him when he had held an initial staff meeting on his arrival eight years previously. This case may be used to provoke an examination of management styles in relation to the needs of the organisation.
