Abstract

This is the first of a two-case series (673-040-1 and 673-041-1). The case describes the reorganisation of an assembly line building domestic electric fires. From an original concept of job enlargement flowed a wide range of industrial engineering changes. The work was carried out by a Central Industrial Engineering Group from the parent company. The case can be used both to consider the detail of improving assembly line operation and to examine the broader issues of the application of a range of industrial engineering techniques.
