Abstract
This is the first of a two-case series (667-010-2 and 667-011-2). John Burns is charged with establishing a new production line for t-shirts as his first managerial position. He must decide the rate at which he can build up to a target production rate. Amongst many factors he must take into account are: labour availability, labour requirements and the learning rate for new employees. He is also concerned with minimising the financial costs to the company during this initial period.
