Abstract

Sussex Cable is a medium sized concern manufacturing power cables in a variety of sizes. The problem of a satisfactory bonus scheme for the maintenance engineers is very difficult, because the machines they service are numerous, complicated, and of many different types. The men insist that the existing ''personal assessment'' scheme is open to abuse and does not pay enough. The head of the work study department feels that the only satisfactory solution would be a scheme based on work measurement, but neither sufficient work study personnel nor sufficient time are available. The problem is now urgent, as the maintenance men are becoming impatient.
