Abstract
Alvarez is an experienced but uneducated mechanic working for a Venezuelan manufacturer of aluminum building products and five years short of retirement. New North American management is concerned about Alvarez’ grumbling and ego-centric behavior and is wondering about the impact of firing him. The cases provide an excellent opportunity to explore self concepts, methods of personal mastery, cross cultural management, and issues of managing personal change. In the B case, management decides to fire Alvarez at a high cost. In the C case, Alverez died of a heart attack ten months later, a fact which adds poignancy to the decision to fire him.
