Abstract
This case describes the choices facing the founder and president of SELF, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to improve the standard of living in developing countries, as he attempts to provide environmentally friendly electricity to rural China. Students examine three alternative energy sources (hydropower, photovoltaics, and clean coal) that are technologically sufficient and environmentally sustainable.
