There are some situations in which people are primed to receive messages: when there''s uncertainty about which direction to take, when something personal is at stake, when they are accountable for a certain outcome, and when there is a crisis. At all other times, you need to wage a battle against all the other information out there vying for your listeners'' attention. Some tips to help you succeed: Use the personal touch whenever possible, frame your message in terms of your listeners'' potential, tie your message to your listeners'' concerns, and speak to them with language they are comfortable with.
