Abstract

Love him or hate him, there is no denying that Jack Welch, the legendary head of General Electric from 1981 to 2001, ranks as one of the most influential CEOs of the last quarter century. The recent publication of his autobiography, unsurprisingly titled Jack, provides an occasion to revisit the lessons that managers may want to carry away from his example. Although books on the management techniques of Jack Welch are many in number, as evidenced by the sidebar titled "Welch: A Reader''s Guide," his autobiography adds the context that illuminates his six most important lessons discussed in this article.
