Abstract

Research on why competent managers fail shows that managers who derail often tend to be suffering from a strength in overdrive. They discover what works for them and then overuse it. Awareness is the first step in combating overdrive, helping the afflicted to learn when to turn strength off and on and how to let it flow just so much. To get out of overdrive, managers need to move out of the comfort zone, preferably in another company with a new job, or expanding or shifting the tasks that come with the job they have. Successful managers accept the responsibility to wield their greatest talents with courtesy and protect others from their strengths in a quest for balance.
