Abstract
Companies building high-volume standardized products such as copiers and automobiles are finally putting their manufacturing house in order. Too many job shops - factories building customized products such as aircraft and machine tools - continue to postpone needed reforms. Job shops can take five steps to reform their operations: make quality mandatory, get on schedule, not sacrifice capacity for cost, improve feeder shop responsiveness, and make performance visible.
