Abstract
A study of how executives function in their political-power environment reveals certain tactics which clash with modern concepts of human relations and the trend to democratize business procedures. Executives take counsel from subordinates, but only when they deem necessary. They develop a complex system of alliances to support themselves and provide channels of communication. Wise executives maintain flexibility in company policy and career planning in case of unforeseen changes. They control the flow of information as strategy or harmony dictate, and use compromise to retain power. Choosing speech and behavior which stimulate the desired response of their audience, they display an air of confidence in their decisions. Executives always maintain some separation between themselves and subordinates.
