Abstract

After its new-found respectability and the government''s interest in deregulating this tightly controlled business, gambling has become one of the most flourishing industries in the US. It grew from less than $40 billion in 1993 to $73 billion in 2003, 32.4% of the total global gambling revenue for the year. By 2004, 46 states in the US had some form of legalised gambling and it is expected that on-line gambling alone would generate revenues of $7.6 billion by 2005. This case provides scope for discussion of the evolution and growth of the gambling industry in the US and the challenges faced by it due to market saturation and US tax structure.
