Abstract
The case gives an overview of the major social responsibility initiatives including environmental conservation and community welfare undertaken by Mexico-based Cemex, one of the largest cement companies in the world. In more than 30 countries in which the company operated, Cemex had taken several steps to improve the quality of living of the people residing in the local communities. The case describes in detail Cemex?s Patrimonio Hoy programme, introduced in Mexico, which aimed at fulfilling the housing needs of the low income group. Under the programme, Cemex developed and delivered affordable building products and services to the poor people living in Mexican cities to construct their own houses. This case is structured to help students: (1) study the social responsibility initiatives of Cemex, particularly in environmental conservation and community welfare; (2) examine and analyse Cemex?s Patrimonio Hoy programme and its contribution in providing affordable housing for the poor; (3) examine the impact of such initiatives on local communities; (4) understand how social responsibility initiatives can benefit a company; and (5) appreciate the role of private sector companies in environmental conservation and community welfare. This case is aimed at graduate level management courses such as MBA/PGDBA and is part of the business ethics and social responsibility curriculum.
