Abstract

This case examines the social responsibility initiatives of Voxiva in Peru. Voxiva uses information and communication technologies (ICTs) to offer healthcare solutions aimed at rural citizens in developing countries. The company has deployed a solution in Peru, known as Alerta, that enables employees in hospitals in rural areas to provide information to the health ministry about disease outbreaks in real-time. Alerta enables two way information between health officials in rural areas and the health ministry based in Lima, Peru. This helps in responding quickly to any disease before it infects many people and becomes an epidemic. Based on the ICTs, Voxiva provides many solutions encompassing public health, public safety and e-government. Based on Alerta, Voxiva has deployed disease surveillance systems in India and Iraq. The company also uses its technology to provide health solutions in parts of Africa affected with HIV/AIDS. This case helps students analyse how technology can be used to deploy healthcare solutions in developing countries, for solving problems relating to the health and safety of the society. The student should be able to: (1) examine the healthcare needs of developing countries and discuss how ICTs can be used to solve healthcare problems; (2) understand the business model of Voxiva; (3) study how Voxiva used ICTs for the well-being of the rural community; (4) examine the positive impact of such initiatives on the developing countries; and (5) understand how the social responsibility initiatives can benefit the company and its sustainability. The case is meant for students of MBA/PGDBA and is intended to be part of the business ethics and social responsibility curriculum.
