Abstract
Arvato Mobile is a mobile content provider based in Hamburg, Germany. It is a subsidiary of Bertelsmann, a large media conglomerate. The case describes the evolution of the company from its inception as Handy.de, an independent entrepreneurial venture, to its acquisition by Bertelsmann. The case focuses on the challenges facing the company''s managers as they develop an organisational structure which retains the entrepreneurial origins of the company, while at the same time taking into account the company''s place in the conglomerate, defining business models and hiring the appropriate talent. The case provides a framework for discussing various aspects of the mobile platform. One important sector of the industry is the mobile content sector, which is in its infancy. As a mobile content developer and integrator, Arvato Mobile represents a new emerging sub-segment of the sector.
