Abstract
The on-line Internet market in Asia had started taking shape by the turn of the 21st century, as the Internet population started rising across various countries in Asia. The on-line auction giant eBay, after its successful business execution in the US and Europe, eyed opportunities in Asian markets. This case talks about how eBay initiated its business in Asian countries. First, it started its operations in the Japanese market where it failed. It quickly shifted focus onto other upcoming Asian markets, mainly China. Before entering into China, it tested various Asian on-line auction markets and zeroed in on a specific strategy to tap China''s on-line auction market. The company also expected to expand its reach in many other Asian countries. This case can be used to discuss the following areas: (1) eBay''s growth and expansion strategies; (2) emerging trends of the on-line auction market in Asia; (3) the on-line auction market scenarios in various Asian countries; (4) facts and fallacies of the Asian on-line auction market; and (5) the future of eBay in Asia.
