Abstract
Since the introduction of mobile phones in the early 1980s, there have been concerns regarding the effects of the use of mobile phones on human health. There were allegations that the microwave radiation used to transmit conversations between base stations and mobile phone handsets could lead to health problems such as fatigue, reduced concentration and cataracts, among others. Although, there was no concrete evidence that mobile phones posed a threat to human health, researchers warned people to take a cautious approach to the use of mobile phones. Meanwhile, mobile phone manufacturers initiated efforts to counter the health fears. The case study while presenting various opinions on the health-related risks associated with mobile phones, raises the issue of how the industry can get entangled in messy legal battles if their products pose a threat to the public health especially when the number of users tends to run into tens of millions. This case also highlights the efforts initiated by mobile phone manufacturers to mitigate the fears about the health risks associated with the use of mobile phones.
