Abstract

This case describes the history of the Moattama Gas Project and Moattama Gas Transportation Company. These entities and joint ventures between TotalFinalElf Petroleum of France, Unocal Corporation of California, Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprises and PTT Exploration and Production Public Company of Thailand, together, these joint ventures developed the Yadana natural gas field located in the Andaman Sea, off the southern coast of Myanmar. The history of the Yadana Project is fraught with controversy and thus provides a platform for discussing a wide range of topics in foreign investment, human rights and corporate social responsibility. This case study identifies and considers values and interests relevant to stakeholders in the operation of foreign investments from corporate interest, as expressed in policy statements to universal interests in human rights instruments.
