Abstract

IBM (International Business Machines) began its journey in knowledge management in 1994 with the design of the ICM (Intellectual Capital Management) AssetWeb framework, which supported community of practice. Community of practice was a forum where people interacted and discussed issues of interest. After the success of community of practice in IBM, it was offered as a knowledge management solution in the market. IBM Global Service realised the potential of knowledge management in their organisation and was involved in research to develop a sophisticated knowledge management system. Research led to the design and development of Lotus Discovery System. But due to compatibility and pricing issues, Lotus Discovery System was withdrawn from the market. In 2003, On Demand Workplace was installed in IBM where employees could share and transfer knowledge across the globe. After the success of On Demand Workplace in-house, it was offered as a business solution to its clients in 2004. IBM reflected on how On Demand Workplace would fare in the market and whether it will be accepted by different organisations.
