Abstract

Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) ranks among the top twenty leading pharmaceutical companies in the world. In the early 1990s, supply chain management at BI showed a major improvement in systems and processes compared to the competitors; this included being awarded the Deutscher Logistik-Preis in 1994 for implementation of a worldwide system, allowing fast and reliable communication processes for management of the supply chain operations around the world. Since then, supply chain management concepts have been created, further developed and improved across the world. BI?s competitors adopted new concepts to optimise their supply chain, creating value and yielding considerable results for their companies, while BI continued to focus on other relevant topics in the various fields of operations. Recent surveys and benchmarking studies, which were elaborated by both the company and well-known consultancy companies in the market, revealed that BI was in need of immediate and continuous improvements to its supply chain management, primarily in inventory management. The company?s inventory level was considered to be above average for the industry.
