Abstract

If you haven''t had a great deal of experience with formulating a strategy for your business or unit, you''re in good company. It''s not an everyday activity. This article walks you through the steps you need to take: (1) scan the outer environment for threats and opportunities; (2) look inside at resources, capabilities, and practices; (3) consider how you will address threats and opportunities you''ve identified; (4) build a good ?fit? among strategy-supporting activities; and (5) create alignment between the people and the activities of the organization and its strategy. And remember - no strategy lasts forever, so learn to use these steps again and again to keep your strategy responsive to the ever-changing business environment.
