Abstract

Abu Yakubu is a young man living with his older sister. His boss (a woman) asks him to prepare a report and allows him to set his own deadline. Instead of setting a deadline within his reach, he opts instead to try to impress his boss. Upon realising his folly, instead of negotiating an extension, he tries to avoid his boss. Abu exhibits characteristics associated with people who are not assertive. The case prepares the class for a discussion on self-esteem development, assertiveness and assertiveness techniques by exposing the student to the sources of and relationship between belief and behaviour, the thought process and the power of the mind. The case is applicable at various levels of an organisation and to various employees, including trainee managers, senior managers, team leaders, function and project heads, supervisors and technical people (eg in engineering, IT, accounting, auditing, etc) who are making a transition to management.
