Abstract
The end of the colonial period in the former Belgian Congo in 1960 precipitatesa period of civil war, llinked to the US-USSR Cold War rivalry. This case tells the story of the United States and United Nations role, some of it covert, in attempting to stabilize the situation- -and, particularly in the case of the U.S., to associate itself with the cause of anti-colonialism so as undermineSoviet attempts to cast the USSR as the world''s friend to revolutionarymovements. Written with support from the Central Intelligence Agency, this definitive account of the war in the Congo is based on sources such as State Department cables and United Nations records, as well as interviews and personal recollections of the author.
