Abstract

This case "note" provides a useful framing and summary of the recent history and forms of affirmative action. By providing non-judgmental summaries of key federal and state legislation, executive orders, state and local laws, regulatory guidelines and landmark court decisions, this note sketches the affirmative actions playing field as faced by the public manager. It provides clear statements of policy and legal constraints such that a variety of management scenarios could be discussed in the classroom. Thus, affirmative action can be considered as a practical matter. In addition, the case provides an explanation of the statistical technique used to determine probability of discrimination within a given labor market for a given occupation.
