Abstract
As with several other cases on drugs and law enforcement, this case focuses on a single neighborhood and the relationship between a fledgling community group and police-specifically the officers of the 49th precinct in the north Bronx. In this variation, neighbors urge the police to adopt specific law enforcement techniques-including a curfew in a neighborhood park and a sweep of benches on the park''s periphery-which the community is convinced will ameliorate a growing drug problem in the middle and lower-middle class area. When police efforts lead to new and unanticipated problems-including a near-riot in the park-both police and neighbors have reason to re-evaluate their relationship and their assumptions.
