Abstract
This is a Simplified Chinese version. This is the first of a three-case series. In mid-1999, negotiators for Walt Disney Company and the Hong Kong Government were having intensive discussions about the possibility of building a theme park known as Hong Kong Disneyland on Lantau. The case presents detailed information about the proposed theme park and the assumptions used by Walt Disney in conducting an economic assessment on the project. It also lays out other alternatives for Disney's entry into the China market. This case may be taught on a stand-alone basis or combined into a joint-negotiation exercise where students are assigned parts to play. This case serves as a useful vehicle for students to explore the making of cross-border investment and market-entry decisions and apply project evaluation techniques to value a joint venture.
