Abstract
This case study takes place in professional football and presents the business situation of one of Germany''s most famous football clubs - Borussia Monchengladbach. The story centres on Rolf Konigs (the Club''s President) and Stephan Schippers (General Manager). Together they have managed to improve the club''s business side and have turned it into a successful professional sports business. The case provides rich information about the structures and operations of a professionally-run football club with a yearly turnover of around 60 million euros. Important cornerstones of the club''s business are matchday-related income, hospitality and events, TV and radio broadcasting rights, merchandise, and player transfer fees. Students are required to analyse the marketing opportunities arising through broadband Internet technology and to develop an appropriate strategy for Borussia Monchengladbach with regard to the club''s specific environment and the co-operation proposals of various potential partners interested in assisting the club in implementing ''Borussia TV''. In order to provide the students with all necessary information, the case describes the club''s structure and background, its different revenue streams, and its main drivers for financial success.
