Abstract
American and East African cultural values collided when the white American manager of a New Rainbow Enterprises store presented her black East African employee with deodorant in response to his alleged unpleasant body odor. To Matthew Odina Musoke, being told that his body order was objectionable was a heinous insult, one that in his home country would be construed, literally, as an infuriating and deadly affront. Sean Harmon, local Director of Operations for New Rainbow Enterprises, was forced to make a difficult choice to resolve the conflict. Matthew refused to work any longer with his manager who had insulted him so severely, even though previously they had enjoyed a friendly and effective working relationship. Both Matthew and his manager, however, had been very valuable employees for New Rainbow, and Harmon is loath to lose either of them.
