Abstract

This is the first of a three-case series (808-014-1 to 808-016-1). It was a warm, Johannesburg summer''s day in January 2003 and Brian Richardson was deep in thought. He and his partner, Charles Rowlinson, were contemplating an entrepreneurial venture with the broad aim of taking banking to the unbanked and underbanked people in South Africa - who constituted 49% of the adult population - and doing so on a profitable basis.
