This case study highlights the different aspects of succession. It describes the issues that affect the departing CEO. It considers the organisation, and the background of internal and external candidates for succession. It also treats the issue of non-executive board-members and their preferences. The aim of this case study is to: (1) help participants gain insight into the dynamics of CEO succession; (2) create an understanding of the barriers of CEO succession and the underlying issues that influence the process; and (3) prompt participants to make a thoughtful analysis of the leadership competencies needed for a successful transition and highlight issues of corporate governance and the role board members play.
