Abstract
The case documents the successful transformation of Endesa over the last five years from a local, public utility into one of the key players in the energy sector. Central to its success has been a focus on expanding within its natural market - Latin America and Southern Europe - and by rapidly moving into complementary lines of businesses such as telecoms. The case provides a unique perspective on the following issues: (1) Endesa as a model for building a global firm in the energy sector; (2) ongoing changes within the energy sector; (3) organisational responses to these changes within the energy sector; (4) strategies for investing in emerging markets such as Latin America; and (5) a better understanding of Latin American economies and ''natural markets''.
