Abstract

This is a German version. This industry note briefly describes the German brewery industry in the year 2008. It focuses at the crisis of this industry with declining consumption, overcapacities and intensive price competition, powerful distribution channels like retail chains and the rising influence of substitutes. Suggestions for strategic options of a typical small and medium sized enterprise ('Stuck in the middle-brewery Adlerbrau') in a formerly national focused and very traditional industry are provided together with excellent material for class discussion using Porter's concepts of five forces and strategic groups. Also information for a PEST-analysis is given in this note.
