Abstract
This is the second of a two-case series (303-028-1 and 303-029-1). The case describes the challenges faced by an excellent Brazilian private bank, Banco Itau, in a crucial auction of the state bank, Banespa. The result of this auction has the potential to change the competitive landscape of the Brazilian banking sector which, till that point had no major foreign players. The case describes Banco Itau''s growth strategies in the context of the Brazilian emerging economy. The case illustrates the challenges in the consolidation of the Brazilian banking sector in the face of: (1) the privatisation of government-owned banks; and (2) the entry of foreign players. The case provides a format to discuss a successful transformation of the financial sector in Brazil and in emerging economies, in general.
