Abstract

This note presents an overview of some fundamental characteristics of organizational design, and builds on Peter Senge's notion that effective leaders must also be effective designers of organizations. The note briefly discusses various forms of structure, introduces Charles Handy's model of emerging organizations, recognizes the growing reality of virtual organizations, and comments on four key systems to which leaders should pay attention: recruiting, development, reward, and information.
