Abstract
Both Parts (1) and (2) constitute one single case and cannot be used separately. Part (2) is to be distributed half-way through the session. The case consists entirely in an exchange of e-mail messages. A human resources (HR) manager sends a warning to all employees about fighting on the premises. An employee answers with a rather rude mail that attracts a threatening response from the HR manager. The HR manager also mails the employee''s boss, asking him to caution his immediate report, but fails to notice and address the underlying causes of the conflict. Unwittingly, the HR manager has contributed to an escalation of the conflict by letting emotions take over. The final mail in Part (2) reveals the roots of the conflict.
