Abstract

This is part of a case series. In 2003, Unilever and Oxfam embarked on a groundbreaking 'learning project' with the goal of examining the role of business in poverty reduction, specifically by studying Unilever's operations in Indonesia. Case (A) describes how the collaboration came about and provides background on Unilever, Unilever Indonesia and Oxfam. It also examines the role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and outlines the challenges of tackling poverty in developing countries, the millennium development goals, and the United Nations Global Compact. The case underlines the difficulties inherent in understanding the role of multinational corporations in poverty alleviation as well as in formulating an effective basis for collaboration between corporations and NGOs.
