Abstract

This is the last of a two-case series (399-144-1 and 399-145-1). First Pacific (A) traces the history of one of Asia''s most prominent ''blue chip'' conglomerates from small beginnings to become a multi-billion dollar corporation. It examines the evolution of First Pacific''s strategy up until 1997. The First Pacific (B) case examines how the company has responded to the 1997 ''Asian Crisis'' to re-emerge as a powerful player. The teaching objectives are to understand the evolution of corporate strategy and behaviour of an Asian-owned firm as it has grown into a major player in the region and expanded internationally. The case allows students to understand the strengths, weaknesses and thinking of blue chip Asian companies.
