Chapter from: "Failure to Communicate: How Conversations Go Wrong and What You Can Do to Right Them"
Published by: Harvard Business Publishing
Published in: 2008

Abstract

When handling toxic conversations, we need to add real skill to prevent our emotions from interfering. In this chapter, the author outlines four tactics that can help: (1) finding the middle ground between emotional extremes; (2) immunizing ourselves against thwarting ploys; (3) changing tack; and (4) recovering from mistakes. She uses anecdotes to illustrate how events might play out in real life. This chapter is excerpted from ‘Failure to Communicate: How Conversations Go Wrong and What You Can Do to Right Them'.
