Abstract
London Heathrow, the UK's only hub airport and Britain's important economic asset, seeks expansion to remain ahead of its European rivals. The case highlights the expansion dilemma faced by it, as environmentalists are concerned that the expansion would increase flight traffic and an eventual increase in greenhouse gas emissions, thereby questioning Britain's role in climate change. On the other hand, The British Airports Authority, the airport's operator and British Airways, the airline, are lobbying hard for the expansion, to make Heathrow a competitive hub and a better place. The case proposes various solutions to deal with Heathrow's current expansion dilemma. The case can ideally be used in a business strategy class where students understand how strategic decisions need to be made with a long-term perspective, and especially one that is not socially / environmentally detrimental.
